How the Quidel QuickVue at-home OTC COVID-19 test works
The QuickVue self-test is similar to other at-home kits. You swab both nostrils, then insert the swabs into a testing solution. After about a minute, you throw away the swabs and insert a test strip into the tube. Final results are available in 10 minutes.
Your test card will show either:
- A blue and a pink stripe — indicating a positive result.
- A single blue stripe — indicating a negative result
- A single pink line or no lines — indicating an inconclusive result

What’s included in the test
Each QuickVue rapid COVID test includes:
- Sterile foam swabs
- Single-use test strips
- Tubes prefilled with a testing solution
- Tube holder

How QuickVue compares to other at-home tests
Unlike Ellume and other test kits, you must take two QuickVue rapid tests within 24 to 48 hours of each other for accurate results. But you won’t need to download an app or use a device to receive your results, as required by Ellume.
Like the majority of at-home rapid tests for COVID-19, QuickVue is an antigen test, which looks for molecules found on the virus. However, a few at-home tests are molecular tests that experts say tend to be more accurate overall.
What Health Canada says about QuickVue
Health Canada authorized the Quidel QuickVue at-home COVID test for emergency use on August 26, 2021. Emergency use allows companies to bring their products to market faster in unusual circumstances, such as during a pandemic.
Results are most accurate when the test is taken three to five days after COVID exposure. Best practice for the majority of at-home kits like QuickVue is to test more than once, usually 24 to 48 hours apart — a practice called “serial testing.” This practice helps to control for false negative results in asymptomatic people with COVID-19.
To be acceptable for travel to and from Canada, rapid antigen tests must be taken under the supervision of a professional within 1 day of travel. As such, you can’t self-administer the QuickVue test alone and use the results to show that you’re COVID free prior to travelling.
What to do if you test positive
If you test positive after either of the Quidel QuickVue tests, contact your primary healthcare provider or your nearest public health department. Assume that you are positive and contagious until further guidance from a medical professional.

About at-home COVID rapid tests
At-home rapid COVID tests — also called antigen tests — detect protein fragments specific to SAR-CoV-2. It’s a convenient way to test for COVID-19 without needing to leave your home or find a testing center. It reports results in as little as 15 minutes but isn’t as accurate as a PCR test.
At-home COVID tests are handy tools when used in conjunction with social distancing, frequent sanitizing, regular mask-wearing and vaccinating against the virus and its variants.
Rapid tests are most accurate for those experiencing symptoms of COVID-19. While false-positive rates are very low, the false negative rate is up to 50%.

Can I get a free rapid antigen COVID test?
You may be able to get free rapid antigen COVID tests for your business or organization from the Government of Canada and some provincial/territorial governments.
Large businesses that qualify for free tests and have 200+ employees will be supplied by the federal government. Businesses that qualify and have 0-199 employees will be supplied at by provincial/territorial governments. Registered charities, non-profit and Indigenous organizations will be supplied by the Red Cross.
