Everything new and leaving Amazon Prime Video Canada in August 2021

Prime Video highlights for August include documentary Val, musical Annette and new series Nine Perfect Strangers.

Jump straight to the list

First off, Cannes opener Annette is set to arrive on the platform on August 20. It stars Adam Driver as a stand-up comedian and Marion Cotillard as an opera singer. They form a glam couple, but their world turns upside down when they have a child, Annette.

Dubbed a “journey of love, passion and fame”, this musical has been described as ludicrous, ambitious and audacious. That makes us believe that Annette will be far from a crowd-pleaser, but if you’re a musical enthusiast you may find yourself completely enthralled. Plus, if you’ve been watching Driver turn into a centaur on repeat for the past few days, this movie should be a welcome respite.

Next up, Val Kilmer fans should run to stream Val, a revealing documentary that chronicles the actor’s career. Turns out, Kilmer has been documenting his own life for years in video form, and now we get to see some of that footage. Reviews for the film have been widely positive. Based on the description, we can almost guarantee that anyone interested in movies in general will find plenty here to love.

August also marks the premiere of Nine Perfect Strangers, a drama about a group of people who go to a wellness retreat to work on improving themselves. However, the retreat’s owner will stop at nothing to heal them and her methods are unusual, to say the least. The series has a top-notch cast featuring Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Regina Hall, Bobby Cannavale, Manny Jacinto, Michael Shannon and more.

If you need an extra dose of romance in your life, anthology series Modern Love returns with season 2, featuring more stories inspired by the New York Times column of the same name. Delightful DC series Stargirl will also be back with new episodes, in which Courtney and her friends take on a frightening adversary: the dark entity of corruption known as Eclipso.
