Carabao Cup information

The 2019/20 Carabao Cup is the 60th season of the EFL Cup. Manchester City are the defending champions and are yet again favourites to take out the silverware.

It was way back in round three when Premier League clubs participating in the Champions League and Europa League entered the competition. That was also when the Carabao Cup started to dish up some surprises

Shockingly in the third round, heavyweight EPL clubs Manchester United and Tottenham went to penalties, against League One side Rochdale and League two side Colchester respectively. Things went from bad to worse for Tottenham who lost on penalties and were knocked out of the tournament.

Carabao Cup competition format

All clubs from the EFL and EPL feature in the competition. Sides compete in a straight knockout format across seven rounds, until the semi-finals where there’s a home and away leg.

The final is set at London’s Wembley Stadium on March 1, where the winner qualifies for the following season’s Europa League. In addition to this the champions receive £100,000 ($172,000) in prize money, though many players participating in the Carabao Cup earn more than that per week.
