The Movie Network: How does the TMN GO app compare?
If you're subscribed to The Movie Network, activating TMN GO is a no-brainer but is it a viable option for cord-cutters?
Owned by Bell Media, The Movie Network (TMN) is a TV channel available from a variety of cable and satellite providers including Bell TV, Rogers Digital Cable, Shaw Direct, EastLink, Vidéotron, and more. Launched in 1983, the channel carries mainly movies, but also offers a great selection of TV shows, documentaries, live sports events, concerts and comedy specials.
Subscribing to a TV pack with TMN generally means getting some serious bang for your buck. The Movie Network service offers seven multiplex channels, including two channels of classic hit movies on TMN Encore, HBO Canada, The Movie Network OnDemand, TMN Encore OnDemand, and three HD channels. In other words, if you’re a movie/TV fan, it has you covered.
Once you’ve subscribed to The Movie Network through a TV provider, you get access to TMN GO, a video-on-demand platform that allows you to stream content from The Movie Network, HBO Canada and TMN Encore via the Internet. This is a great way to catch up with popular series from HBO, Cinemax and Showtime on your own schedule. Oh, and it’s the only way to legally stream current seasons of massive HBO hits like Game of Thrones in Canada. CraveTV carries a fair share of HBO goodness, but they only offer past seasons of current shows and classics. With TMN GO, you can keep up with your favorite series in real time.
What is TMN GO App?
If you subscribe to The Movie Network, you already have access to TMN GO, the platform that enables you to stream content from the TMN channels via the Internet. Otherwise, you’ll need to add an extra channel pack to your TV subscription to enjoy all the perks that come with TMN GO. Unfortunately, the platform isn’t available on a standalone basis. At least not yet.
How much does The Movie Network cost?
TMN GO is free for subscribers of The Movie Network. How much you’ll pay for The Movie Network, however, depends on your TV provider. Generally, you can get a channel pack with The Movie Network and HBO Canada for around $20/month.
How much content does The Movie Network offer?
Movie buffs can breathe easy – there is a ton of content available on the platform. In short, TMN GO offers everything TMN, HBO Canada and TMN Encore have available. The movie library includes both acclaimed flicks like Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Shape of Water, as well as blockbusters like Atomic Blonde, Blade Runner 2049, or La La Land. Older titles are also plentiful, from spooky flicks like Interview with the Vampire to classic rom-coms like 27 Dresses and musicals like Mamma Mia.
As far as series are concerned, you can catch up with popular shows like Divorce, Barry, Insecure, Kidding, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Leftovers and more. For some series, you will be able to see a new episode of a current season on the night it premieres, shortly after it’s available on TV. You don’t need to register an account to see a preview on what’s available in the library, so head over the TMN GO website and take a look.

How much data will The Movie Network use?
Although the service is technically free, keep in mind that streaming burns through your data allowance. It can use up anywhere from 300MB/hour on the lowest video quality to 3GB/hour for a high-quality HD stream. If you have a broadband plan with a set data allowance per month, you should keep an eye on the service to make sure it doesn’t use up too many GB.
TMN GO allows you to download titles to your mobile device to watch them offline, so you can avoid using up mobile data too quickly.
What devices are compatible with The Movie Network?
There are several ways to watch TMN GO, including with mobile and streaming devices like Chromecast and while there isn’t currently a TMN GO app available on Apple TV, you can Airplay via your iOS device. You can watch on up to two devices at the same time. Here’s a list of gadgets the platform is compatible with:
