Case study: Banks vs money transfer companies

Nahm fell in love with Australia while on vacation and decided to start a new life here. The oldest of three, she was helping her younger brother pay for secondary education and wanted to continue to do so while abroad.

Before making the move, Nahm decided to look into what cash transfer options were available to send $1,000 Australian dollars a month to Thailand to her brother to make sure that he could continue with his studies uninterrupted.

What’s the difference?

With the transfer service company there will be 980.12 THB for Nahm’s brother’s tuition than if she used an Australian bank. Even if the $13 difference in fees were calculated, it would still save them 636.27 THB.

How do I compare transfer companies when sending money to Thailand?

Check the following:

  • Competitive exchange rate. It may not look like a big difference at first glance, but once you multiply the amount you plan to send, it’s easy to see how much you can lose if you don’t choose a company or bank that is cost effective.
  • Little to no fees. To get the exact fee, you should look at them in conjunction with the exchange rate. To do this, you only need figure out what the fee would be in the receiving currency.
  • Fast turnaround time. For Nahm, who is sending regular payments, having to wait for the bank transfer may be acceptable. However, if her brother or other sibling were to need money for an emergency, the transfer service would be a better option because of the shorter turnaround time.
  • A range of convenient pick up methods for your recipient. This is dependent on your circumstance and whether or not your beneficiary has the means to pick up money sent to them in person.
  • Flexible transfer amounts. If you plan on sending large amounts of money at a time, it would be a good idea to find out what the wire transfer service providers limit the transactions to.

Tips for picking up cash in Thailand

Check the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) website before travelling outside of Australia. In the instance of Thailand they recommend that visitors exercise a high degree of caution. Check the nearby cash pickup locations carefully before picking up your cash and try to choose one that is inside of a local bank with added security.

What documentation do I need to send funds?

You can choose between bank to bank transfers for sending money to Thailand or cash transfer companies. With a cash transfer you will have to know your recipient’s contact information and full name. If you choose to use a bank for the transfer you will have to do the following:

  • Bank account. You will need to have an existing bank account in the bank you choose to conduct a transfer. In some cases the bank may allow for you to set up your account before the move.
  • Recipient bank. The account number, routing number and SWIFT number will be needed for the bank you are sending the money to.
  • Recipient name. The name of the account holder.
  • Recipient address. Also make sure that you know the exact address of the person who holds the Thai bank account you are sending the money to.

With some banks this information will be stored so that with subsequent transactions you only need to pick the beneficiary.

With a bit of quick research you can save yourself a bundle on money when transferring money overseas.
