Case study: Banks vs money transfer companies

Nahm fell in love with Canada while on vacation and decided to move here after finding a new job. As the oldest of three children, Nahm was helping her younger brother pay for university in Thailand and wanted to continue to do so after she moved to Canada.

Before making the move, Nahm decided to research which cash transfer options were available to send CAD$1,000 a month back to Thailand to help her brother. You can see the results of her research below.

Canadian bankMoney transfer service
Exchange rateCAD1 = THB23.45CAD1 = THB25.69
Transfer feeCAD$25CAD$12
Amount in Thai Baht for every $1,000 Canadian dollarsTHB23,450THB25,690
Transfer time2-5 business daysLess than 24 hours
Options availableBank account to bank account transfers onlyDirect to bank account or for an additional fee can be cash pick-up

What is the difference?

If Nahm uses the specialist money transfer service, her brother will receive THB2,240 more each time CAD$1,000 is transferred. Furthermore, the fees cost CAD$13 less with the transfer service compared to the bank and the money will arrive much faster. If Nahm wants to send cash for her brother to pick-up using the money transfer service, she may have to pay an additional fee of CAD$15, however the exchange rate is still much more competitive with the money transfer service and will still save her money even if she does pay more for fees.

How do I compare transfer companies when sending money to Thailand?

When sending money from Canada to Thailand, consider the following factors:

  • Competitive exchange rate. Exchange rates vary across different companies. Some service providers will offer great exchange rates but hide big fees with the competitive rate. Other companies will offer reasonable or low fees and a competitive exchange rate. It’s important to shop around and compare these factors to find a good deal.
  • Low to no fees. Every company will charge some kind of fee. As mentioned above, compare the exchange rate and the fee to determine how much money you will be charged. Make sure you’re aware of any fees taking place on both your end and your recipient’s end. If you send over a certain amount of money to Thailand, some companies will waive their fees completely, however this is generally if you transfer $10,000 or more.
  • Fast turnaround time. If you are sending regular payments, you may not mind if the money takes a few days to reach its destination. However if you’re sending emergency funds, you may require a fast turnaround time of just minutes. Shop around and compare your options.
  • A range of convenient pick up methods. Consider the types of money pick-up options offered by different companies. Some services can send directly to a bank account while others will offer cash pick-up only. Fees will vary depending on the method, so consider what is best both for you to send the money and your recipient to receive it.
  • Flexible transfer amounts. If you plan on sending large amounts of money at a time, find out which companies allow the biggest amounts to be transferred regularly. Keep in mind some companies may also have minimum limits, so consider your options.

How do I send money to Thailand?

The Thai Baht is a frequently traded currency in the worldwide market and many financial institutions can transfer funds overseas easily and quickly to Thailand. Here are some companies and banks that may provide money transfer services to Thailand:

  • Money transfer services. Almost all money transfer services will allow you to transfer funds to Thailand. These include online only and cash pick-up services like MoneyGram, Western Union, TorFX, FairFX, WorldRemit and others.

Sending an emergency cash transfer to Thailand

Travellers to Thailand also need to consider how they can get cash in the event of an emergency. Here are a few options to consider when you need emergency cash:

  • Bank-to-bank transfer. You may be able to contact your local Canadian bank and have cash sent to you at a bank in Thailand. Ask both your bank and the receiving bank how much the fees will be for this service.
  • Travel insurance emergency assist. If you purchased a travel insurance policy or have travel insurance linked to your credit card prior to your trip to Thailand, you may be able to recover emergency funds by contacting your credit card provider or bank.
  • Cash transfer company. You can pick up emergency cash at a money service provider. Have a friend or relative send you money and pick it up at a designated location. You’ll need valid photo ID to pick up the cash and will need basic details about the transaction including the amount of money sent and the sender’s full name.

Tips for picking up cash in Thailand

The Canadian Government recommends that visitors to Thailand exercise a high degree of caution. Be especially careful when picking up cash from a designated location and try to choose one that is inside of a local bank with added security. Take a friend with you for support and refrain from using public transportation. Ask your hotel to call you a trusted taxi service and return immediately to put the cash in a safe place.

What documentation do I need to send funds?

You can choose between sending cash or bank to bank transfers to Thailand from Canada. When using a cash transfer service, you’ll need to know your recipient’s contact information and full name. If you choose to use a bank for the transfer you’ll have to do the following:

  • Bank account. You’ll need to have an existing bank account with the bank you choose to use for the transfer.
  • Know your recipient’s bank information. You must know their account number, routing number and transaction number.
  • Know your recipient’s full name. The full name of the account holder.
  • Know your recipient’s address. Make sure that you know the exact address of the person who you are sending the money to.

Many banks will allow you to store this information online, so if you send regular payments you may be able to select the recipient and send the funds without inputting all of the information again.
