Bottom line
The HSBC Travel Rewards Mastercard is a good fit for customers who spend a lot of money on travel, gas and transit. It offers flexible rewards, a generous welcome bonus and a decent level of travel insurance for a fee-free card. Just be aware that this card comes with slightly higher interest rates and the value of points is lower than with many other cards.
Frequently asked questions about the HSBC Travel Rewards Mastercard
It definitely is. This card lets you earn accelerated rewards for travel, gas and transit. You can also redeem points for travel and take advantage of multiple forms of travel insurance. The main drawback of this card is that it doesn’t offer airport perks such as lounge access or other travel benefits (though these are not usually offered with any fee-free cards).
To qualify for the 25,000 points welcome bonus with this card, you’ll need to spend $1,000 in your first 180 days. If you cancel your card within the first 6 months of signing up, you won’t get your welcome bonus even if you spend the required amount of cash.
HSBC indicates that its 25,000 welcome points bonus would be worth around $100. This would imply that each point you earn will be worth half a cent on average.
