History of CyberKongz Collection
The bustling market for randomly-generated online avatars is a sector within the NFT industry that has gained a lot of attention historically. CyberKongz fits within that category and has become one of the biggest projects in the space. CyberKongz are a collection of unique, randomly generated images of apes. Each ape has distinguishing characteristics and, therefore, rarity. The project started from humble beginnings. During the initial launch, 989 Genesis Kongz were minted by artist myoo. Each was sold for 0.01 ETH. One was kept as a mascot, and ten were retained for a later auction and set to ‘Legendary’ status. A few short months later, at Christie’s first on-chain auction event in early December 2021, a couple of Genesis CyberKongz NFTs sold for several hundred thousand dollars. CyberKong #201 sold for 185 ETH, equivalent to $793,439 USD at the time, and CyberKong #46 sold for 96.6 ETH, equivalent to $414,304 USD at the time. The proceeds from these sales were sent to a national park and gorilla sanctuary in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Aside from the market frenzy that followed there is an interesting community and crypto-inflected elements to the project, which we’ll go into below.

Evaluating CyberKongz Collection
CyberKongz is not only one of the most successful NFT projects, it has also developed one of the more sophisticated and mature ecosystems. As mentioned above, Genesis Kongs have sold for considerable amounts of money. However, not all Kongz are priced as high. The average price during Q4 2021 was approximately 12.5 ETH. Not cheap, but much cheaper than those sold during the Christie’s auction.
One of the key aspects of Genesis Kongz is the built-in yield generation. Every first-generation CyberKong yields ten BANANA tokens for the owner. This is programmed to continue for the first 10 years of existence. BANANA is the cryptocurrency token that underpins the entire CyberKongz ecosystem. The tokens can be used to unlock exclusive Discord servers, rename NFTs, adjust an NFTs biography, and breed other Genesis Kongz to create Baby Kongz. Baby Kongz were the second generation of NFT tokens to be created from the CyberKongz project.
As the ecosystem continued to develop, the CyberKongz developers then integrated NFTs with gaming. There is now a growing number of games available within the ecosystem that can be played with NFT characters. The games also encompass a play-to-earn element utilising the BANANA tokens as rewards.
Taking this a step further, CyberKongz has now partnered with the NFT metaverse platform The Sandbox to offer a 3D world where incarnations of holders’ Kongs can interact. Environments developed so far include shrines and cities on Kong Island, with a variety of games including parkour and RPG mechanics.
In the future, the project plans to release a virtual vending machine where CyberKongz holders can buy plots of ‘land’ on Kong Island.
Key Considerations
The imagery around CyberKongz is consciously retro. The 8-bit characteristics actually mask one of the more varied generative pallets for this type of NFT. Before investing in the NFT project here are a few variables that differentiate different CyberKongz NFTs:
- Bandanas
- Eyewear
- Hats
- Running noses (nice)
- Eyepatches
- Headphones
- Fur colour
- Skin colour
- Background colour
- Eye colour
- Facial expression
- Hairstyle
Note: one fun element to flag is that now holders of CyberKongz NFTs can download an ‘.obj’ file that relates to the NFT. These files can be used with 3D printers, so NFTs can be brought into the real-world. CyberKongz is - to our knowledge - the only NFT to offer this ‘officially’, so if you’re looking for a 3D printed cartoon ape that will really tie your living room together, this could be the NFT project for you.
