A brief introduction to blockchain-based games
In 2021, the crypto space witnessed a robust surge and increased adoption of crypto games — thanks to a flurry of promising projects closing huge funding rounds and receiving great media coverage.
Unlike traditional gaming systems that primarily benefit developers, blockchain-based games — also referred to as GameFi, a combination of gaming and decentralized finance, or NFT games — are predominantly driven by nonfungible tokens and a play-to-earn model, allowing users to contribute and participate in an on-chain monetary ecosystem.
Crypto game characteristics
Most GameFi projects typically share the following features:
- Nonfungible tokens (NFTs). Cryptographic tokens — digital artwork, memes, GIFs or virtual elements in a game — that live on the digital ledger of blockchains and can’t be readily exchanged for other NFTs, allowing players to be the sole and verified owners of the game assets.
- Decentralized finance (DeFi). An experimental form of finance powered by smart contracts on the blockchain instead of central financial intermediaries, such as banks. Players can then lock up — also known as staking — some of their tokens to earn interest.
- Play-to-Earn (P2E) mechanics. Instead of the predominant “pay-to-win” model in traditional gaming, blockchain games adopt a P2E model. It rewards players with tradable NFTs or tokens, which can be sold on cryptocurrency exchanges, for their time and effort. P2E is one of the largest drivers behind the growth of the GameFi industry.

- Frequent updates on game development progress and offers gameplay preview
Early-stage crypto games
If you’re looking to dive into newly announced NFT games, you may enjoy an unfair advantage compared to those who join the game at a later stage. Getting into a project early means you’d gain opportunities such as early access, getting whitelisted for presale events and purchasing tokens or game assets at a discounted price.
Is the reward of early adoption worth the risk?
Being an early investor also means you’d have to rely on limited project information to make a sound decision on whether it’s the right time for you to hop onto the project — which puts your money at risk.
What are some of the risks associated with early adoption?
Early adoption tends to expose investors to the most risk, such as:
- Limited project information
- Project uncertainty often leads to waves of FUD (short for ‘fear, uncertainty and doubt’) attacks
- Token price swings wildly according to hype and sentiments
- High chance of getting “soft rugged” (which are challenging to identify), especially if presales or IDOs did not meet the intended target amount

Early-stage crypto games: How we selected the titles for this list
This list consists of GameFi projects that are in their earliest stage of development and typically possess the following characteristics:
- A small community with less than 20k to 50k following on social media channels
- Currently in the earliest stages of its roadmap
- Might not have held any funding and presale rounds
- IDO and token contracts may not be completed
- Low market prominence and minimal media coverage
- Zero or few AMA sessions
- Have yet to offer any gameplay preview
- No mini-games or NFT staking yet
- Limited information on its website and whitepaper
Things to watch out for:
- Tokens with the same name/abbreviation. It’s possible to find tokens with the exact same name or abbreviation. One of the most common exploits in the crypto space are scam tokens maliciously designed to mislead those who are new to the crypto space. Always check the project’s official website for the token contract address before buying.
- Don’t buy into the hype. Always “DYOR” — stands for Do Your Own Research — and scrutinize important details such as the project’s tokenomics, team background, roadmap and more.
- Potential rug pulls. Rug pull scams — where crypto developers abandon a project abruptly and take off with investors’ funds — are notorious in the crypto space. Join or follow the project’s official social channels and check out what the community is saying. However, do note that FUD (stands for “fear, uncertainty and doubt”) is another common issue among community members, so trust your own findings and instinct before deciding if the project is worth your investment. If you sense something amiss, it’s better to avoid the project altogether.
- Be diligent and protect your investment. Never hit suspicious links — especially direct messages on Discord or Telegram — or connect your wallets to phishing sites. Fake sites with a seemingly identical link to the official project website (e.g. “aaxieinfinity.com” — note the double “a” in the link) are also commonly used by scammers to steal assets from unsuspecting victims.
