How does the HSBC Rewards Program work?
The HSBC Rewards Program is a points program that’s tied to a suite of credit cards on offer from the Canadian branch of the HSBC bank. There are seven main personal cards to choose from as well as a handful of business cards. Each card offers different features and rewards, depending on how much you pay for your annual fee. The personal cards on offer from HSBC are listed a, along with some of their main features.
How much is each point worth?
Your HSBC Rewards Points will be worth different amounts based on what rewards you cash them in for. As a reference, you’ll get around $1 for every 200 points you redeem on travel. This means you’ll get an average of $100 for every 20,000 points you collect.
Depending on what card you have, you’ll earn between 0.75 and 3 points per dollar. At the lower end of the scale, you’ll need to spend over $26,000 on your card to earn $100 worth of points. At the higher end, you’ll have to spend as little as $6,700 to earn $100 worth of points.
If you intend to spend a lot of money on your card, it could be worth it to pay a higher annual fee for a premium card. This is because you’ll earn as much as $400 in points with a premium card for every $100 you earn with a basic card.
How to earn points on your HSBC credit cards
You’ll be able to earn HSBC Rewards Points whenever you spend money on your credit card. All HSBC credit cards give you a flat rate of points for every purchase. With certain cards, you’ll also be able to earn accelerated points for travel, dining or entertainment purchases.
Several HSBC credit cards also give you the chance to earn bonus points when you sign up. The downside is that HSBC doesn’t offer any special promotions, so there are limited chances to earn extra points beyond what’s offered with your card.
How long will it take me to collect points with my HSBC Mastercard?
The number of points you can earn with your HSBC credit cards depends almost exclusively on how much money you spend on your card. It also depends on how many points you’ll earn for each dollar you spend. You’ll be able to pay a higher annual fee for a premium card, which will let you earn at least 3 points for every dollar you spend. You’ll also get a bigger welcome bonus with this type of card, which will let you earn more points right off the bat.
How to redeem HSBC Rewards Points
When you’ve collected enough HSBC points, you can sign in to the HSBC Rewards Centre to redeem for rewards. You’ll be able to browse the online catalogue for merchandise, gift cards and charitable donations. You can also redeem your points separately for flights and HSBC financial credits. More details on how you can redeem your points for each category of reward are listed below.
Flights and other travel
You won’t be able to redeem your points for travel directly through the HSBC Rewards Centre. Instead, you can redeem your points as a statement credit on your HSBC Rewards Mastercard. You’ll just need to apply your points within 60 days of an eligible travel purchase. The upside of this is that you’ll be able to book flights and other travel with the provider of your choice without needing to worry about booking restrictions.
Merchandise, gift cards and charitable donations
You’ll be able to browse HSBC’s online rewards catalogue for hundreds of specialty products and gift cards. The HSBC Rewards page has a searchable database of all of its merchandise, gift cards and charitable donations. You just need to specify what you’re looking for by narrowing your choices down with a keyword or brand name. You can also choose to convert your points into a donation for the charity of your choice using the “donations” category.
HSBC financial products
You’ll be able to redeem your HSBC Rewards Points to pay for a number of HSBC’s financial products. You can use your points to pay off your credit card, contribute to your mortgage or put extra funds into your savings account. You should be able to carry out some of these redemptions through your online banking, or by signing into the HSBC Rewards Centre.
