What COVID tests do I need to take?

To travel out of, or within, Canada, you need to show proof of vaccination. Negative COVID test results are not acceptable. Additionally, travellers entering the country may be required to quarantine for 14 days if they’re not exempt or fully vaccinated.

There are different occasions on which you need to take a COVID test upon entering Canada:

Pre-entry test

PCR (molecular) tests should be taken within 72 hours of arriving in Canada. If you have connecting flights, you still have to make sure your test is taken within 72 hours of when you enter the country. Rapid antigen test results are also acceptable if the test is professionally supervised and taken within 1 day of entering or exiting Canada.

Arrival test

This test is taken when you arrive in Canada (not before). Fully vaccinated travellers are exempt.

Day-8 test

This test is taken 8 days after entering Canada. If you have to quarantine, then take this test 8 days into isolation.

Who is exempt from COVID testing requirements for travellers?

Fully vaccinated travellers are exempt from arrival testing, although they may still have to supply pre-entry test results. Occasionally, fully vaccinated travellers are spot checked by border authorities and are required to take an arrival test.

You may be exempt from COVID testing requirements if you work in certain industries or are travelling for certain purposes. For example, drivers delivering essential medical supplies are exempt from all pre-entry, arrival and Day-8 tests. Healthcare practitioners entering the country to perform duties as licensed professionals are exempt from arrival tests and Day-8 tests, but they must still take pre-entry tests.

Other notable exemptions from regular COVID testing rules include children under 5 years old and travellers passing through Canada en route to another country (including travellers to Alaska).

To check if your occupation qualifies you for any COVID travel exemptions, see the Government of Canada website.

Can I get free rapid COVID tests for businesses?

You may be able to get free rapid antigen COVID tests for your business or organization from the Government of Canada and some provincial/territorial governments.

Large businesses that qualify for free tests and have 200+ employees will be supplied by the federal government. Businesses that qualify and have 0-199 employees will be supplied by provincial/territorial governments. Registered charities, non-profit and Indigenous organizations will be supplied by the Red Cross.

To apply for free tests, visit the federal government’s website and be prepared to provide the following details:

  • Name of your organization
  • Point of contact for your organization
  • Number of employees you employ in Canada
  • Provinces and/or territories in which these employees work
