History of Cool Cats NFT Collection

After launching in July 2021, Cool Cats rapidly became one of the most popular NFTs collections in the market – at the time of writing (December 2021), CoinGecko reports that the total market cap is over $280 million USD. The project was created by a team of illustrators, blockchain developers and marketers who go under the pseudonyms, Clon, Tom, Lynq and ELU. Each creator reserved 1 cat apiece and a further 100 for airdrops and prizes in potential future competitions. A total of 9999 Cool Cats have been minted, and the NFTs have slotted nicely into the booming market for unique profile picture-style images - even Mike Tyson purchased one for his Twitter profile. In early October, a unique zombie Cool Cat sold for $1.13 million USD, which set a new record in the collection. According to Decrypto, the seller – who had minted the token for only $84 USD in July – pledged to donate the proceeds to an animal shelter.

How to buy Cool Cats NFT on OpenSea

The all-time average price of Cool Cats NFT is 3.725 ETH ($6,775), so expect to pay around that cost to secure an NFT in the Cool Cats NFT collection:
  1. Fund your wallet with cryptocurrency to buy your NFT.
Most NFTs on OpenSea are bought and sold using Ether, the native crypto on the Ethereum blockchain. Make sure you have enough ETH in your wallet to cover the cost of the NFT and any related fees, like gas. If you're a bit short, compare ways to buy ETH to reload your wallet.
  2. Find your NFT on OpenSea
OpenSea has hundreds of thousands of NFTs listed, so consider looking through collections to help narrow down the selection.
  3. Transfer ETH to a web3 wallet
MetaMask is a popular web3 wallet option, and our guide on MetaMask has detailed instructions on how to make the transfer.
  4. Buy your Cool Cats NFT NFT
When you're ready to make your purchase, click the "Buy Now" button on the specific NFT you're interested in. OpenSea will show you the total cost, including fees, and after purchasing be sure to approve the transaction in your MetaMask wallet.

Evaluating Cool Cats NFT Collection

There are several perks and benefits that accompany the ownership of a Cool Cats NFT, but with such a high price tag, are the benefits worth it? Here are a few things to bear in mind as you make your decision.

The Cool Cats team has claimed it gives 20% of all the revenues it raises, from both primary and secondary markets, back to the community via competitions and raffles. This helps to encourage greater use of the ecosystem and encourage Cool Cat participation. Each Cool Cat owner also receives monthly limited-edition Cool Cat-linked NFTs which they can trade on the NFT market.

In addition to the perks of owning a Cool Cat, the project appears to have an encouraging roadmap ahead. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but the team has hinted at forthcoming opportunities in 2022 to ‘breed’ Cool Cats, creating a new generation of tokens that will combine the characteristics of parent NFTs - similar to the model employed by Crypto Kitties. The team has also spoken of the $MILK token, which will be an Ethereum-based cryptocurrency that will power the future ecosystem. This ecosystem – which is not yet live – is set to be like The Sims computer game but for Cool Cats. It will allow Cool Cat owners to interact with other owners and allow for the customisation of NFTs with in-game purchases. Staking is also set to be possible with the new token. On top of the unique gameplay, the ecosystem will include a voting platform and guilds of players. Given the developing technology, experts within the community have also suggested that one day owners may be able to port across Cool Cat NFTs into other compatible ecosystems.

At the time of writing, there are 5036 unique holders of Cool Cats, and the cheapest one on offer is £36,303 USD. This is pricey, but down from the peak in early October 2021 when the floor price was $49,300 USD.

Key Considerations

There are 300,000 possible variations of Cool Cat NFTs based around various permutations of 5 key categories:

  • Body
  • Face
  • Hat
  • Outfit
  • Background colour
All the Cool Cats are cool – but some are more cool than others. Let’s explain: every NFT minted is assigned a ‘cool score’ between 3 and 10. The majority of Cool Cats sit between 3 and 6, however, the privileged few land higher up the scale. This scale includes:
  • Cool: 4,599 cats are between 3 to 4 points
  • Wild: 3,000 cats are between 5 to 6 points
  • Classy: 1,750 cats are between 7 to 8 points
  • Exotic: 650 cats are between 9 to 10 points
The coolest and most rare Cats are those with complete matching outfits: think pirate or French mime costumes. In addition to these, there are 66 totally unique Cool Cats in existence who have not been generated from the usual palette – these are, as you can imagine, the rarest Cool Cat NFTs to own and, therefore, the most desirable.
