As part of the new Aeroplan program, American Express offers three main Aeroplan cards with annual fees ranging from $120 to $599 per year. Find out what benefits you can expect to get with each card and learn which option might be the best fit for you based on your spending preferences and lifestyle.

American Express Aeroplan card options

American Express offers three main Aeroplan credit cards to choose from. The number of Aeroplan points you’ll earn with each card typically depends on how much you pay for your annual fee.

American Express Aeroplan Card

The American Express Aeroplan Card comes with a fee of $120 per year and offers a wide range of travel benefits. These include multiple forms of travel insurance including flight delay and baggage insurance, common carrier insurance and rental car coverage. However, this card doesn’t come with travel medical insurance or compensation for trip cancellation/interruption.

You also won’t get many airport perks with this card aside from your first bag checked free on Air Canada flights. You should also keep in mind that the American Express Aeroplan Card is a charge card so you can expect to pay 30% interest on outstanding balances (which is around 10% higher than you would pay for an average credit card).

ProsCons
  • Fees are much lower than Aeroplan Reserve cards
  • Offers various forms of travel insurance
  • Provides a decent return on Aeroplan points
  • Earn up to 50,000 welcome bonus Aeroplan points. New Cardmembers can earn up to $1,100 in value within the first year.
  • Offers few airport perks
  • No travel medical or trip interruption/cancellation coverage
  • High interest rates on outstanding balances

American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card

The American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card comes with a fee of $599 per year and offers comprehensive travel benefits. These include all of the travel insurance coverage included with the basic Aeroplan card plus travel medical insurance worth up to $5 million and trip cancellation/interruption coverage.

You’ll also get tons of airport perks included with this card. This includes an annual companion flight, priority check-in and boarding, Air Canada lounge access and VIP treatment at Toronto International Airport. You can expect to pay an interest rate of 19.99% on outstanding balances with this card.

ProsCons
  • Offers comprehensive travel insurance
  • Includes a number of exclusive airport perks
  • Gives a high return on Aeroplan points
  • Earn up to 85,000 welcome bonus Aeroplan points. New Cardmembers can earn up to $2,700 in value within the first year.
  • Very high fee
  • Added fee of $199 for additional cards
  • High interest rates (though lower than the basic Aeroplan Card)

American Express Aeroplan Business Reserve Card

This card offers many of the same benefits and privileges as the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card. The key differences between the two cards revolve around earn rates, interest rates and supplementary insurance offerings.

For example, you’ll earn accelerated points when you spend money on hotels and car rentals with the Business Reserve Card (versus dining and take out orders with the standard Aeroplan Reserve Card). You’ll also pay 16.99% interest on outstanding balances instead of 19.99%.

Finally, you’ll get an added layer of insurance to protect against employee misuse or fraud with this card. Other than that, the Aeroplan Reserve and Business Reserve cards have almost identical features.

ProsCons
  • Exclusive travel perks and benefits
  • Gives a high return on Aeroplan points
  • Low interest rate for purchases
  • Earn up to 85,000 welcome bonus Aeroplan points. New cardholders can earn up to $2,700 or more in value within the first year.

How to compare American Express Aeroplan cards

When you’re deciding which Aeroplan American Express card to use, you might like to compare some of the following features to find the best fit:

  • Return on points. Find out how many Aeroplan points you stand to earn on your purchases when you spend money on your card (and in which categories).
  • Welcome bonuses. Compare the bonus offers on offer with American Express Aeroplan cards as these can sometimes give you a year’s worth of points or more.
  • Perks and benefits. Figure out which benefits and perks you think you’ll actually use and get the card that aligns best with your lifestyle.
  • Interest rates. Decide whether you will likely carry an outstanding balance on your card and aim for the lowest interest rate possible if this is the case.
  • Annual fee. Do a bit of math to figure out if paying an annual fee is worth the higher return you’ll get on points and benefits.

How to earn Aeroplan points on your American Express

You can earn Aeroplan points by spending money on your Aeroplan American Express. The points you earn will be linked to your Aeroplan membership so that all of your rewards accumulate in the same place. Based on which card you have, you’ll earn different amounts of points for different categories of spending.

You’ll also earn 2x the Aeroplan points whenever you shop with Aeroplan partners or the Aeroplan Store, and show your Aeroplan membership when you pay with your card. The table below shows how many points you can expect to earn with each card type per dollar spent.

How to redeem your Aeroplan points

When you’ve collected enough points, you can exchange them for travel or other rewards using your Aeroplan account. All you need to do is sign in to the online platform to see how many points you’ve accumulated. You should also be able to check this information on your credit card statement.

If you’re looking to get the biggest bang for your buck, you may want to redeem your Aeroplan points for flights instead of other types of rewards. You’ll also get a decent value for your points if you exchange them for travel-related rewards such as car rentals and hotel stays. You’ll typically get the lowest return on your points if you cash them in for gift cards and merchandise.

What other rewards can I get?

You can redeem your Aeroplan points for all types or rewards. These include the following:

  • Travel packages. Exchange your points for an all-inclusive vacation with Air Canada Vacations.
  • Hotel accommodation. Earn extra rewards when you cash your Aeroplan points in for an overnight stay at select hotels.
  • Car rentals. Use your points to rent a car with Avis or Budget and hit the road in style.
  • Merchandise. Redeem your points for hundreds of brand-name products and merchandise.
  • Gift cards. Use your points to get gift cards for some of your favourite stores.
  • Charitable donations. Transfer your points into a cash donation for your favourite charity.
