How can you tell if a watch is Canadian made?

There are a few ways to tell if the timepiece you’re interested in purchasing is made in Canada. The law states that any brand that claims its products are “Canadian made” has to abide by certain requirements:

  • 51% of all manufacturing costs must be incurred within Canada.
  • There must be complete transparency with the “made in Canada” statement. So if the bands or parts are imported from overseas, this must be clearly mentioned.
  • The final assembly of the watch must be done in Canada.

Fines apply to those who claim to be Canadian made and the Competition Bureau enforces these requirements on every individual case.

Why buy Canadian made watches?

Buying Canadian made comes with a number of advantages. For starters, your money will be sent straight back into the local economy rather than heading to overseas corporations. You’re also likely to pay less for shipping and returns in the case that you need to send something back.

Are Canadian made watches more expensive?

This is determined on a case-by-case basis. There are some watchmakers that hand make watches right here in Canada, which may force higher pricing. But in saying this, you’re also paying for the employee wages of people here rather than internationally. Alongside this, you won’t have to worry about international transaction fees or expensive shipping for returns. Most brands also have their own real-time customer service that is available to help with any queries.
