How can you tell if a knife is Canadian made?

Canadian knifemakers tend to be independent, family-owned businesses that don’t sell in large shops or chains.

Instead, they have their own websites or use marketplaces such as Etsy with virtual shopfronts.

This makes it super easy to tell if their items are Canadian made. Click on their story or about us sections for details on where their knives are forged. Alternatively you can contact them directly for confirmation.

On marketplaces such as eBay it can be more difficult. Often the specs won’t disclose where the knife is made.

A way around this is to look at the images which may have a “Made in” line on them. You can also Google the brand for more information or contact the seller for details.

Why buy Canadian made knives?

In a time when mass-manufacturing is the norm, Canadian bladesmiths are keeping the art and tradition of forging alive.

By buying locally made, you’re supporting these bladesmiths and their work and securing yourself a quality-made knife that can be custom-made to your hand, style and needs.

Locally-made knives often use locally-sourced materials. For example, 2nd Shot sources old donated skateboards.

Are Canadian made knives more expensive?

The short answer is: yes. This is because they’re handcrafted and not mass-produced which brings up the price.

The quality of the materials and the make can make up for this price difference. As can the fact that you can often request items to be custom-forged to your liking.
