Owing to the image of a loon on the one-dollar coin, the Canadian dollar (CAD) is sometimes referred to as the “loonie”. Closely tied to the US economy, the CAD accounts for approximately 2% of all global reserves, superseded only by the U.S dollar (USD), the euro (EUR), the yen (JPY), and the Great Britain Pound (GBP). With its extreme sensitivity to movements in crude oil and other products, traders often use the CAD to speculate on trends related to these commodities.

First introduced in 1875 to replace the Norwegian speciedaler, the Norwegian krone (different from the Swedish and Danish krone) is the official currency of Norway. Since the beginning of the industrial period, Norway’s economic growth has been vigorous, particularly as a result of the country’s abundance of natural resources, which has led the country to claim the second highest GDP per capita in Europe, second only to much smaller Luxembourg. As a result, Norway boasts both a very high standard of living and a strong welfare structure, unlike many other European countries.
