How do rapid COVID tests work?

To take a rapid antigen COVID test, you’ll need to collect a sample by swabbing the back of your tonsils or nose. While some tests require a sample from deep inside your nasal cavity, which can be a little uncomfortable to collect, some antigen tests only require a shallow nasal sample.

Usually, you have to dip the swab into a vial containing a liquid and swirl it around a few times. Afterwards, you place several drops of the liquid solution into a small testing device and let it sit for 15-30 minutes.

After this time, a reader on the device will indicate whether COVID was detected in the sample. The results will be positive, negative or inconclusive. If inconclusive, then there was a flaw in the test and you’ll have to take a new test using a brand new kit. COVID tests cannot be reused.

Rapid molecular COVID tests like Lucira can be partially conducted at home, but you have to collect your sample under the supervision of a healthcare professional via Zoom or some other video chat service. You’ll then courier your sample to a lab for professional analysis. Results are typically available in several days.

If a negative result appears, you’ll be issued with a certificate which can be used to travel or visit restricted areas.

Can I use a rapid COVID test to travel?

Rapid antigen tests are approved for travel to and from Canada if administered or observed by a medical professional within 1 day of travel. A number of other countries accept rapid antigen test results from incoming travellers as well. However, not all do, so you’ll have to check the government website of the country to which you’re travelling to find out for sure.

Rapid molecular tests are acceptable for travel to and from Canada. These tests use more precise and accurate technology and are therefore more reliable for determining whether test subjects have COVID.

You should be aware that most rapid COVID tests are antigen tests and can’t be used for travel to/from Canada unless taken under the supervision of a medical professional within 1 day of travel.

Lucira is one of the few rapid COVID tests that uses molecular testing technology and was therefore approved by Canadian authorities for travel before rapid antigen tests gained approval.
