How BTNX compares to other at-home tests
BTNX tests compare well with other rapid antigen tests on the market.
- Accuracy. These tests have a large sensitivity range (78.6% to 96.2%) – at their lowest level, they compare poorly to other tests, while at their highest sensitivity, they outperform other tests.
- Cost. BTNX COVID-19 tests are between $10 and $20 per test depending on where you buy them. Tests under $13 each are good value when compared to other tests, while anything over $13 is more expensive.
- Speed of results. BTNX is on par with other rapid antigen tests for speed, with results displaying in around 15 minutes.
What does Health Canada say about BTNX COVID-19 tests?
Health Canada has approved BTNX Rapid Tests for use in Canada. The product manufacturer indicates that the tests are intended for use by medical professionals and should be used as a secondary validation of a positive or negative COVID-19 test result (after a PCR or nucleic acid test).
It’s important to note that BTNX tests cannot be used to validate a negative result for travel purposes unless they are validated by a telehealth agent, lab technician or doctor.
What to do if you test positive
If you test positive for COVID-19, you’ll want to contact your medical provider for more information and self-isolate at home for the time required by Health Canada. You’ll typically need to self-isolate for at least 10 days from the time you get symptoms.
You’ll also want to let people you’ve been in contact with know that you’ve tested positive and be sure to call an ambulance or consult with a doctor if you develop severe symptoms.
About at-home COVID-19 rapid tests
Rapid antigen tests detect specific proteins on the surface of the virus to give you a positive result. You can test for COVID-19 in under 15 minutes with these tests, and you should get a fairly accurate result as long as you follow the instructions carefully.
Most antigen tests are carried out by a doctor or technician at a lab or clinic, but you can also order them over the counter to use at home. Just keep in mind that these tests can’t be used for travel unless you have your results verified by a medical professional.

Can I get a free at-home COVID-19 test?
It’s possible to get a free at-home COVID-19 test in many provinces if you show symptoms, and you may even be able to get one without symptoms if your province has a large supply. The best place to find out where these tests are being given out is to call your local health authority or search for “free rapid antigen tests” in your local area.
