How the Boson Rapid Test works

The Boson Rapid SARS CoV-2 test is easy to use when you follow these steps:

  1. Collect your sample. Use a swab to take a sample from the back of your nasal cavity.
  2. Prepare your sample. Put 8 drops of buffer liquid into the provided tube, insert your swab and wait 1 minute.
  3. Test your sample. Add 2–3 drops of the liquid from the tube onto your test card and read the results in 15–20 minutes.

What does Health Canada say about Boson COVID-19 tests?

Health Canada has approved Boson Rapid SARS CoV-2 tests for use in Canada. The product manufacturer indicates that the tests are designated for use by medical professionals and should only be used in conjunction with a nucleic acid test to show a positive or negative COVID-19 test result. It is important to note that Boson tests cannot be used to validate a negative result for travel purposes unless taken under the supervision of a medical professional within 1 day of entering or exiting Canada.

What to do if you test positive

If you test positive for COVID-19, you’ll want to contact your medical provider for more information and self-isolate at home for the time required by Health Canada. Most authorities recommend isolating for 10 days from the time you get symptoms.

You’ll also want to notify any close contacts that you have a positive result, and be sure to call an ambulance or consult with a doctor if you develop severe symptoms.

About at-home COVID-19 rapid tests

Antigen-based tests – also called rapid tests – detect specific proteins on the surface of the virus to give you a positive result. You’ll get your results in under 20 minutes in most cases. Most antigen tests are carried out by a healthcare professional or trained operator at a clinic, but you can also order them over the counter. These tests are most accurate for those with symptoms of COVID-19, but they aren’t as accurate as PCR tests.

Can I get a free at-home COVID-19 test?

You may be able to get a free at-home COVID-19 test in Canada depending on which province you live in. You’ll usually need to display symptoms and visit a COVID-19 testing centre near you to get a rapid antigen test kit to take home (or you’ll do a PCR test on site).

It may be possible to get free rapid antigen tests for asymptomatic or regular testing in some provinces. The best place to find out where these tests are being given out is to search for “free rapid antigen tests” in your local area.
