When is the cheapest time to fly to Portugal?

Overview

Portugal has four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-October) are less expensive times to travel. They’re defined by mild weather, which is ideal for exploring the city on foot, though we would recommend packing a windbreaker just in case. Autumn is also harvest season, which means there’s wine aplenty!

Summer in Portugal is the high season when both tourists and locals flock here for the warm sea air and stunning water and to take part in local festivals across the country.

The winter months between November and February are Portugal’s rainy season, however, it’s the time of year when cities like Lisbon come alive with Christmas decorations, markets and food.

Best time to visit Portugal for…

  • Sightseeing: Visiting from March to May or September to October guarantees lower temperatures and less crowds, making outdoor activities like hiking and sightseeing more enjoyable.
  • Beaches: Travellers flock to the stunning fishing town of Algarve from July to September when the water is at its warmest and beach cafes are in full swing.
  • Wine: Visit in autumn (September to October) and head to the Douro Valley just in time for the grape harvest season.
  • Surfing: While surfing in Portugal is available all year round across the coastline, it’s best to visit from September to November for good weather and consistent swells.
  • Events and festivals: Local festivals are aplenty in June, especially in Lisbon. Summer visitors are kept busy with outdoor concerts, craft fairs and food-related festivals.
