The best time to visit Niagara Falls

Find the perfect time to chase North America’s most famous falls by weather, price and experiences.

With its cascading waters flowing 365 days of the year, Niagara Falls is always a sight to behold.

Here’s the secret on when’s the best time to visit Niagara Falls to see them at their prime.

Best time to visit Niagara Falls

October is one of the best times to visit Niagara Falls for a balance of pleasant weather, affordable prices and quieter streets. Sitting just at the end of peak tourist season, hotel prices are near their lowest, the temperature is a comfortable 18°C, and boat rides under the falls are still available.

If you’re happy to brave the cold, you’ll get even cheaper hotel rates in December coupled with views of magnificent ice sculptures around Niagara Falls.

Niagara Falls sees four distinct seasons, each offering its own perks for visitors.

Summer. June, July and August are peak season, with huge crowds and high prices. During the day, temperatures average a beautiful 25°C, and taking a boat ride under the falls is a great way to cool down.

Spring and fall. Shoulder season at the falls can be just as good, especially when you’re paying a fraction of the price for accommodation. Temperatures hover between 10°C and 19°C, and it’s not uncommon to see snow.

Winter. Despite temperatures dropping below minus 8°C, Niagara Falls never freezes over completely. Most of the big activities like boat and helicopter rides don’t run during this time, but crowds are fewer and witnessing the falls framed with icicles is quite something.

  • Boat trips. Boat tours under Niagara Falls coincide with peak season and run from May through to October. This is one of the most popular activities in the area, so if you want to beat the queues, avoid visiting between 11am and 3pm.
  • Light shows. Niagara Falls is lit up every single night of the year in a beautiful light show. To see something truly spectacular the Winter Festival of Lights runs during the Christmas season when fireworks light up the sky above the falls.
