Germany’s capital city is alive and kicking all year round, but there are certain times of year when it’s better to visit than others due to the weather.

Here’s a guide to the best time to explore Berlin.

Best time to go to Berlin

For the best weather and most events on, travel to Berlin during the summer months, from May to September.

By May, Berlin has thawed out from its winter freeze and temperatures begin their hike up to between 19° and 24°C. This is the ideal temperature for sipping drinks in beer gardens, ambling through parks, taking a walk along the famous wall, or getting out into the fresh air of the Grunewald Forest.

The city hosts a number of festivals in summer too, including the International Berlin Beer Festival, Fête de la Musique and the Carnival of Cultures.

Best time to visit Berlin for…

  • Sightseeing. The warmer months of May to September are the best times to explore Berlin as many of its sights are outdoors. To avoid the crowds you could try heading here at the end of April or the end of September when it’s still not too cold. Of course, if you want to see the Christmas markets you have to visit in December.
  • Clubbing. Summer is the ultimate time to go clubbing in Berlin. Yes, queues are longer and doormen can be a pickier, but many of the city’s top clubs have outdoor spaces and gardens that can’t really be enjoyed in the colder months.
  • Museums. Berlin’s museums are open all year round so it doesn’t really matter when you visit. Come in winter and many of the galleries have on-site cafes where you can get hot drinks and food to thaw you out.
