If you’re a resident of BC, you’ve probably already discovered that you have to get your basic car insurance with ICBC. This is because ICBC has a stronghold on the car insurance market and other providers aren’t allowed to sell mandatory insurance products in this space.

That said, you can still purchase basic Autoplan insurance from a third-party broker like BCAA. You can also turn to BCAA to get a quote for any extended coverage that you may want, since this is an area where other providers are allowed to market their insurance products.

What is BCAA car insurance?

BCAA (also known as the British Columbia Automobile Association) is a car insurance company that offers extended coverage to BC residents. This coverage is meant to provide complete protection for you and your car beyond ICBC’s basic Autoplan coverage.

This extended insurance doesn’t include mandatory insurance such as third-party liability or accident benefits. However, it does include your choice of collision or comprehensive insurance as well as excess liability coverage.

BCAA also offers tons of extra add-ons to get you the best protection available. Some of these benefits you’ll get for free while others come included with a BCAA membership. There are also a few extras that you’ll have to pay for if you want to add them to your policy.

How does a BCAA membership work?

You can choose to become a BCAA member for a small monthly fee. This will allow you to save money on your BCAA car insurance premiums. It will also give you discounts at over 100,000 retailers worldwide. On top of that, you’ll get roadside assistance wherever and whenever you need it at no additional cost (up to a certain limit).

What types of insurance does BCAA offer?

BCAA only offers extended coverage to BC residents, but it’s licensed to sell ICBC’s policies if you need basic coverage as well.

ICBC mandatory insurance

BCAA is licensed to sell ICBC’s mandatory Autoplan insurance. This package includes third-party liability coverage to help you cover costs if you get sued after you cause an accident. It also offers accident benefits which help to pay for any injuries that you or your passengers may sustain after a collision.

  • One accident forgiveness. Your premium won’t go up after your first at-fault accident.
  • Guaranteed repairs. Your repair work will be guaranteed when you have your car repaired by a BCAA Approved Auto Repair Service (AARS) facility.
  • Re-keyed locks. You’ll be reimbursed up to a certain limit to re-key or re-code the locks if your keys or keyless remote are stolen.
  • Pet coverage. You’ll get a certain limit of coverage to pay for vet expenses if your pet is injured in a collision.
  • Motorcycle coverage. BCAA will replace your riding gear up to a certain limit if you get into an accident on your motorcycle (valid with extended motorcycle insurance).
  • Service guarantee. You’ll automatically get $500 if you make an initial claim and don’t hear back from BCAA within 6 hours.

Can I purchase additional coverage if I want more protection?

BCAA offers a number of endorsements that you can add to your insurance for an extra fee. These include the following:
  • Damage to non-owned cars. Offers liability protection when you drive a rental car or another vehicle that you don’t own.
  • Loss of use. Covers the cost of arranging a back-up vehicle or other transportation when your car is being repaired as a result of a covered claim.
  • Personal property coverage. Protects the contents of your vehicle from thieves by offering a certain level of coverage to replace personal items stolen from your car.
  • $0 glass deductible. Provides windshield, sunroof and all other glass replacement with no deductible.
  • Enhanced replacement cost coverage. Ensures that you get the full value of your new car if it’s written off as part of a covered claim.

BCAA bundles

As a BCAA member, you may be able to . You’ll also receive free tire protection when you choose to sign up for a package deal. You may also get a further discount if you insure multiple vehicles at one time.

What do customers say about BCAA auto insurance?

BCAA car insurance has relatively poor reviews online, though certain locations are reviewed favorably on Google. For example, BCAA has a rating of 1.7 on InsurEye as of 7 July 2020, though this is based on only a handful of customer reviews.

Positive reviews indicate that BCAA offers better rates for extended car insurance than ICBC. Negative reviews seem to focus on BCAA‘s long processing times for claims, high deductibles and poor customer service.
