How it works
The Artron COVID Rapid Test is easy to use when you follow these steps:
- Collect your sample. Take a sample from both nostrils according to test instructions.
- Prepare your sample. Add 12 drops of buffer liquid into the sample tube, insert your swab and twist it against the sides 10 times before letting it sit for the allotted time.
- Test your sample. Add 4 drops of the liquid from the tube onto your test card and wait for 15 minutes.
- Interpret your results. Consult the test card panel to find out if your results are positive, negative or invalid according to the legend below.

How Artron compares to other at-home tests

- Accuracy. Artron COVID Rapid Tests have a mid-level sensitivity rating and can detect 91.3% of positive cases. This is lower than some of the top-rated tests which can detect over 97% of positive cases.
- Cost. Artron tests can cost as low as $12 per test depending on where you buy them. They aren’t the cheapest tests on the market which tend to fall between $9 and $11 but they cost less than those in the $14 to $20 range.
- Speed of results. Artron is on par with other rapid antigen tests for speed, with results displaying in 15 minutes.
What does Health Canada say about Artron COVID-19 tests?
Health Canada has approved Artron COVID Rapid Tests for use in Canada. The tests are meant to be sold for medical use in conjunction with a nucleic acid test to show a positive or negative result. They have a mid-level sensitivity in comparison to other tests. You won’t be able to use them to validate a negative result for travel purposes unless the test is administered or observed by a professional within 1 day of entering or exiting Canada.
What to do if you test positive
You’ll want to contact your medical provider or provincial health agency if you test positive for COVID. They will likely recommend that you self-isolate at home for the time required by Health Canada (usually 10 days from the onset of symptoms).
You’ll also want to get in touch with anyone you’ve been in close contact with to inform them that you have a positive test result. Make sure to reach out to your doctor or go to the nearest hospital for treatment if you develop severe symptoms.
About at-home COVID-19 rapid tests
Many self tests can be bought online or in pharmacies and retail stores. These tests look for specific proteins in your nasal sample which would indicate a positive result. You’ll get a higher accuracy when you use them if you have symptoms, though they can give a positive result if you’re asymptomatic but have a high viral load. You’re also meant to use them in conjunction with a PCR test to be certain of your result.

Can I get a free at-home COVID-19 test?
It’s pretty difficult to get a free at-home COVID-19 test in Canada unless you’re displaying symptoms. In this case, you’ll usually need to visit a local COVID testing site to get a free test which you can then use at home. You may also be able to get free rapid antigen tests if your province has a surplus to hand out. Just search for “free rapid antigen tests” on Google or call the health authority in your local area to see what’s available.
