Woman Wearing Surgical Mask
Important note: As the nation responds to the coronavirus outbreak, people are buying essentials in bulk. Buy only what you need, and wear face masks according to the advice of a trusted medical professional or official guidance from the World Health Organization. Finder vets each mask retailer as a legitimate reseller prior to listing by confirming business and item documentation. We also request a physical sample to compare against the advertising. We do not test any mask for its filtration capabilities, and none of the masks listed here are NIOSH-certified to our knowledge. Read the CDC's page on counterfeit respirators to learn more about NIOSH certification.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now recommending that the general public voluntarily wear a cloth or surgical mask when going out for necessities or while essential employees are working to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. Here’s where you can easily order disposable surgical masks online and have them delivered straight to your door.

What’s the difference between surgical masks and N95 masks?

There are several main differences between surgical masks and N95 masks:

PurposeProtection against large droplets of hazardous fluids, such as in a medical setting, as well as respiratory droplets emitted by the wearer.Protection against fine particles such as dust, smoke and aerosols.

What is melt-blown fabric?

Unlike cloth masks, surgical masks are made with nonwoven, melt-blown fabric. This material is used to effectively filter out bacteria while allowing the wearer to breathe more easily.

It’s made using melted polypropylene, polystyrene, polycarbonate or other similar types of plastic. As hundreds of strands of the melted plastic cool, they bond together to form a fabric sheet. Most surgical masks consist of three layers, sandwiching a layer of textile between two layers of melt-blown fabric.

Because melt-blown machines are so precise and intricate, it’s difficult for manufacturers to scale production in response to the demands caused by COVID-19. As a result, there has been a global shortage of surgical masks.

How to do a melt test

To test if your surgical mask is made of melt-blown fabric and not cloth, follow these steps to do a melt test. Use caution when working with open flames.

  1. Use scissors to cut through the mask so that you can peel the layers apart.
  2. Separate the top and bottom layers from the middle layer.
  3. Carefully apply a flame to the middle layer using a lighter.
  4. If the material melts, it’s melt-blown. If it lights on fire, it is not.

How are surgical masks tested?

Surgical masks are put through five tests to comply with regulations set by government agencies such as the FDA, NIOSH and OSHA:

  • Bacterial or viral filtration efficiency (BFE or BVE). Measures the filtration ability of the mask against bacteria and/or viruses.
  • Particle filtration efficiency. Measures the ability of the mask to filter out larger particles.
  • Differential pressure. Determines the breathability of the mask.
  • Synthetic blood fluid penetration resistance. Tests the ability of the mask to protect against fluid splashes.
  • Flammability. Measures how slowly the mask takes to catch fire and how long it takes to burn.

Which side of the mask should face out?

The colored side of the disposable face mask should always fact outward, with the white side against your face. The colored side of the mask offers water resistance, while the white side of the mask is absorbent.

There was misinformation shared on social media that you should flip the mask, depending on whether or not you were sick. This has been proven to be false.

Can I get a made-in-USA disposable mask?

These are in short supply and very hard to come by. However, Clinical Supplies has a limited stock of American-made 3M N95 respirator masks available on its website.

There are lots of American-made cloth masks available, however.

Washable alternatives to disposable masks

If you’d rather be able to wash and reuse your face masks, try these cloth mask options. While not intended for medical use, cloth masks can be a suitable alternative for general daily use while practicing social distancing.

Are there any disposable masks made anyplace but China? Our company is committed to purchasing anywhere but China. All of your sources are made in China, even when I search “made in USA”

      Hi Ruth,
Thanks fr reaching out to Finder. I understand you would like to purchase masks that are made in the US. The stores we have listed on the page use suppliers and manufacturers from different parts of the world. Where suppliers have specified that they ship from the US, that means they import the product first into a US-based warehouse under local and federal regulatory guidelines and standards, and then process shipments from their US locations.

If you are looking for face masks that are made in the US, there are sellers on our page on Where to buy Made-in-USA face masks selling 3-ply disposable masks that is also approved by FDA.

I hope this helps. Should you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to reach us out again.

      Cheers,
      Joyce

Is the verification of disposable masks mean they are made in the USA?

    • Avatarfinder Customer Care
      JoshuaMay 18, 2020Staff

      Hi Zelda,

Thanks for getting in touch with Finder. I hope all is well with you.

I have read your message and I understand you want to know if the disposable masks marked as Finder verified are made in the USA.

Regarding your question, the answer is no. The Finder verified signifies that the business is a legitimate seller of their products. It’s not an assurance that their products are made in the US. The verification allows us to ensure that the vendors on these pages have proper licenses, are not scamming or price gouging, which occurs often on 3rd party marketplaces like Amazon and eBay.

If you want to buy USA-made masks, you can go here. On that page, you’ll be able to shop American-made products with fast shipping options. There are also imported products that are brought into the country under all proper local and federal regulations, that are then shipped from US warehouses.

I hope this helps. Should you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to reach us out again.

      Have a wonderful day!
      Cheers,
      Joshua

      Hi Linda,

Thanks for reaching out to Finder.

I’m afraid that the online stores listed on this page does not advertise where the masks are made, please know that it may vary depending on the manufacturer. Masks sold online are made globally by manufacturers from different locations.

      All the best,

I am looking for paper masks MADE in USA.
So far, only finding paper masks IMPORTED.
    Any help?

      restyaoananMay 1, 2020Staff

      Hi PJ,

Thanks for reaching out to Finder.

Most paper masks through our pages have been imported and we currently don’t list any disposable USA made paper masks.

Though the paper masks are manufactured from other countries and shipped in the US, they are within import guidelines with verified certificates and licenses.

I hope this helps. Stay safe.

      Best regards,
      Resty
