Where else can I get hair dye without going to the salon?
If you’re unable to make it to the salon but need a color refresh, some stylists will mix up a to-go batch of dye. Contact your local salon to see if it offers this service. You can also find professional hair color at Sally Beauty and Sleekshop.
Do natural hair dyes work?
Many hair dyes that don’t contain peroxide or bleach are formulated to be semi-permanent, so they generally don’t last as long as traditional hair dyes. However, we tried Overtone’s healthy-hair dye ourselves and loved the results. You can also try henna for a natural alternative.
Hair dye alternatives
If you’re in a pinch or don’t want to use permanent dye, certain household items can be used to give your hair a temporary tint. For example, you can use Kool-Aid to brighten your hair and add a fun color — as a general rule of thumb, use 2 packets per 2 cups of water to give ends a boost or color your whole head. Leave in for 15-30 minutes, depending on your desired intensity.
Coffee or vegetable juices like beet and carrot can also be used for subtle toning. And chamomile tea and beer can give lightened hair extra lift.
