Important note: Due to recent events, many stores are experiencing a shortage of cleaning products and other household essentials. Some retailers may currently be out of stock or charging above-average prices. However, it’s important to know that stockpiling items isn’t necessary right now and that over-buying can leave others vulnerable.
Current guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that cleaning with regular EPA-registered household cleaners are effective at removing germs from surfaces. Avoid relying on vinegar, essential-oil-based products and alcohol solutions that contain less than 70% alcohol.
When it comes to keeping your home clean and germ-free, having a few staple cleaning sprays and other supplies on hand can go a long way. If you’d rather shop online to save yourself a trip to the store — and maybe even some money — here’s where to look first.

What’s an effective homemade disinfectant spray cleaner?
Since the spread of COVID-19 and the emphasis on disinfecting surfaces, it can be challenging to get some of your favorite cleaning products in stores. You may find many antibacterial and disinfecting spray cleaners are out of stock.
That being said, it’s possible to make your own disinfecting spray cleaner right at home. Here’s what you’ll need:
1 cup distilled water
1/2 cup rubbing alcohol 60% to 90% concentration
1/2 cup white vinegar
10 drops of your favorite essential oil — lemon or lavender are popular
Glass spray bottle. Note: Glass is safest. Some essential oils can significantly degrade plastic, and cause pitting in metal.
Combine all ingredients together in a large measuring cup. Pour into the glass spray bottle and shake well to thoroughly mix.
Use this spray on all high-traffic areas such as counter tops, door knobs, light switches and in bathrooms.
