Antiseptic vs. antibacterial vs. antibiotic ointments
These three types of creams and ointments are commonly used to treat minor skin wounds and abrasions — but there are key differences among them.
- Antiseptic ointments are formulated to deter the development of bacteria, fungi and viruses on the skin. Common antiseptic ingredients include povidone-iodine, iodine, rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. While these ingredients can be effective, they can also be harsh on the skin if used for prolonged periods of time.
- Antibacterial ointments deter the development of bacteria on the skin, but do not affect fungi or viruses. Common antibacterial ingredients include triclosan and triclocarba.
- Antibiotic ointments also stop bacterial growth on the skin. They use antibiotic ingredients such as neomycin, bacitracin and polymyxin. These ointments should never be used on large areas of the body.
What’s the difference between an antiseptic and a disinfectant?
Both are used to kill harmful pathogens, but antiseptic solutions are used to treat cuts, scrapes and other injuries on the skin, while disinfectants are used to kill germs on surfaces such as doorknobs, desks and keyboards. If you’re looking to disinfect a surface rather than your skin, use cleaning wipes or other cleaning solutions rather than antiseptic creams.
