Expert review

The Bread Cashback™ American Express® Credit Card is much like its doughy namesake suggests: simple and unshowy. It earns 2% cash back on all purchases with no reward caps and no spending categories. It also costs $0 annually and features an APR of 19.74%, 27.24%, or 29.99% variable depending on your credit score.

A few short years ago, the emergence of a 2% cashback card to the market would have been much more noteworthy given the thin 2% card market. But as of 2022, consumers have a sizable share of such cards to pick from, as well as category cards stuffed to the brim with additional flat-rate categories, perks and other goodies. If you’re going to launch a 2% cashback card these days, the card needs to have a little extra oomph to differentiate it from the other 2% cards on the market.

Unfortunately, the Bread Cashback™ American Express® Credit Card is lacking a unique feature that helps it stand out. You won’t find a signup bonus on the card like you’ll find on the Wells Fargo Active Cash℠ Credit Card, and the Bread Card also lacks a 0% intro APR offer on balance transfers, something you’ll find on the Citi® Double Cash Card.

None of this is to say the Bread Card is a poor choice. If you’re only concerned about earning 2% back on your purchases, it works just as well as the competing cards I mentioned. But in a market where card features can result in hundreds of dollars in value, the Bread Card’s simplicity is more of a hindrance than an asset.
