Divergent was a novel debut for Veronica Roth, and what a successful debut it was! The story explores a post-apocalyptic society in which citizens are defined by their social and personality-related affiliations.
Romance, psychological stimulation and tests of endurance with the occasional devastating consequence – this novel is perfect for dystopian fiction fans.
So what comes next? What can we read that will keep us turning those pages until the very last one and still be hungry for more?
Here are some suggestions that just might keep you on the edge of your seat.
1. The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games is the first novel in the acclaimed trilogy created by Suzanne Collins. Like Divergent, The Hunger Games is firmly fixed in the fantasy genre and although it’s aimed at young adults, we’d say it can be enjoyed by all ages. A heroic 16-year-old volunteers for the 74th Hunger Games in place of her younger sister Primrose Everdeen. What ensues is a three-novel series that will capture your attention and your heart.
From author James Dashner, this dystopian novel targets a young adult audience. The sci-fi creation follows Thomas, who wakes up suddenly with no memory of his life before, aside from his name. With a battle against an ever-changing and limitless maze, will Thomas ever get back to whatever normality was before the Glade?
Matched is, yep – you guessed it – another dystopian young adult novel. Created by Allyson Braithwaite Condie, this is the first novel in “The Matched Trilogy”. The plot follows a society in which people are “matched” with their life partners at just 17, until Cassia Reyes decides to pry further into this process and, as we see in Divergent, questions arise concerning society’s norms and ideas. Is this society all that it seems?
The “Delirium Trilogy” by Lauren Oliver is a set of futuristic novels aimed at young adults, set in the year 2091. Throughout the trilogy, we follow Lena Haloway, an unfortunate teenage soul who falls in love within a society that sees love as an incurable disease. These novels are sure to keep Divergent lovers hooked till the very end.
Under the Never Sky is a novel debut for Veronica Rossi. With a powerful presence but from a sheltered past, this novel’s protagonist Aria embarks on an important mission beyond the sheltered dome of Reverie into the wasteland in search of her missing mother. A Savage outsider named Perry becomes an unlikely comrade and might be her only chance to survive. Divergent fans are certain to devour this gripping page-turner which follows the same sense of adventure.
From author Scott Westerfeld comes sci-fi novel, Uglies. This novel portrays an extreme version of some issues faced by many today: the ever-mounting media pressure to look a certain way in society. It is set in a future post-scarcity world where inhabitants are forced to undergo extreme cosmetic surgery at the age of 16 to become “pretty”. Like in Divergent, the novel’s protagonist – Tally – soon learns that behind the scenes, society isn’t quite as it seems.
