Telco providers in Anguilla

This English-speaking island is a British colony, and there are two main telco operators: Flow and Digicel. Both operators have been tried and tested by both locals and international travelers, and can be trusted. Operators go through a strict approval process before being allowed to operate in the country and each competes with the other to offer the best deals. The island has good network coverage in the main populated areas and a healthy overall speed. Passports must be shown to purchase the SIM cards. We’ve highlighted the best deals below.

About Anguilla’s telecommunications

Flow is the main provider and Digicel follows closely behind, so each has about a 50% market share. Both providers offer services on 2G, 3G and 4G/LTE platforms. The best coverage is in the main towns and cities, and service in other areas might be unreliable, whatever network provider you use. There are several plans available that include data and reasonably-priced international calls, and they are probably cheaper than using your home phone. Below, we have listed the two providers available in Anguilla and the best deals they offer during your stay.

Flow

Flow is the main provider, and it has a wide reach across the island, although service can suffer once you hit the shore. Flow offers 2G, 3G and 4G/LTE services. Prepaid SIM cards can be purchased from official stores or approved resellers. Credit can also be picked up from the same retailers. If you wish to use a 4G service then make sure you ask for that specific SIM card. Prepaid SIM cards can be purchased for XCD25 and passports must be shown to purchase the SIMs.

Credit can be purchased in varying amounts between XCD5 and XCD200, from supermarkets, gas stations and official stores. Top-ups are valid for 90 days. Dial *120#. to check your balance.

The standard default data rate is charged at XCD0.41 perMB. The following data packs can also be added by dialling the appropriate number in the right-hand column.

1GB No local mins, 50 SMS 1 day XCD5 *244*0# to activate
1GB 200 local mins, 200 SMS 3 days XCD16 *244*1# to activate

10GB 1000 local mins, 1000 SMS 30 days XCD120 *244*3# to activate

Flow also allows roaming in the US on AT&T networks. Canada, Bermuda, Suriname, Guyana, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago, Bahamas and Flow networks that sell the following “Travel Passes” are also useable:

Digicel

Digicel is the second largest provider on the island. Service is good but can suffer once you hit the coast. It offers 2G, 3G and 4G/LTE services. Prepaid SIM cards can be purchased from official stores or approved resellers. Credit can also be picked up from the same retailers. If you wish to use a 4G service then make sure you ask for that specific SIM card from the retailer. Prepaid SIM cards can be purchased for XCD20 – XCD25. Passports must be shown to purchase the SIMs. Dial *120# to check your balance.

The following “4G” data plans can be added:

100MB 25 anywhere mins, free Digicel SMS Valid for 1 day XCD6
700MB 175 anywhere mins, free Digicel SMS Valid for 7 days XCD28

Digicel also sells a “Roam Like You’re Home” option which can be purchased for XCD27, valid for 7 days. This service will allow customers to use Digicel services in the US, Canada and other Caribbean locations at no extra cost. Dial *153# and follow the instructions to activate. Some top tips from finder.com staff:

  • Locals call a SIM card a “Card” or “SIM”
  • Ask the retailers to help set-up the SIM card for you. They are official sellers and will only be too happy to help
  • There are only a few official stores/service centers on the island, but try and make a visit to one of them to get help and advice on the best options

TripAdvisor tips for the best SIM cards and where to buy them

While it’s well known for reviews, booking hotels, flights and holidays, TripAdvisor also has many user comments that can help guide you through which SIM cards have been tried and tested in Anguilla.

Here are some top tips from TripAdvisor users:

“We purchased one from Digicel and it was $10. You can purchase prepaid minutes at Digicel or buy the prepaid cards anywhere. They are sold all over the island.”

”It’s handy to have an Anguilla phone # to deal with the calls to people, restaurants, etc. on the island.”

“Do you make a lot of calls while on the island? If you don’t, just use your own phone, turn off the roaming and connect to Wi-Fi.”

Pros and cons of Anguilla’s telco provider

Flow and Digicel require you to have a SIM-unlocked, GSM-compatible international phone. To double check you have this option, or whether it’s possible to unlock your device, contact your provider before you set off on your travels.

Pros:

  • Prepaid credit when required
  • No in-store contract needed
  • Could be compatible with your current phone

Cons:

  • No devices offered with the SIM card packages
  • Can only be used on SIM-unlocked GSM phones
  • SIM cards can be hard to locate
