A modern take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic character, Elementary sees Sherlock Holmes relocating to New York and helping the NYPD solve difficult cases with the help of Joan Watson, a former surgeon. Watson enters the scene as a sober companion, as Sherlock is an addict who struggles to maintain his sobriety over the course of the series. Their relationship deepens, blossoming into a fruitful partnership.

Elementary is a classic procedural at first glance, but the series wins bonus points for highlighting the special bond that exists between Sherlock and Watson. Also, the episodic mysteries are more complex than with your average crime show and Sherlock’s battle with addiction is downright inspiring.

Based on a true crime book, the series centers on the agents who kick-started the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit and pioneered the development of modern serial-killer profiling. Fascinating stuff.

Besides the historical importance of the fictional series, Mindhunter also keeps viewers glued to the screen thanks to slick visuals and chilling interviews with prolific serial killers, who are based on real people. At the moment, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit is the longest running non-animated US primetime TV series. Don’t worry, it’s worth the time investment, thanks to compelling characters and interesting storylines. The show centers on Olivia Benson, a detective who investigates crimes of a sexual nature. Cases are often ripped from the headlines, so a lot of episodes are based on actual crimes that occurred in the US.

Due to the nature of the crimes featured, mostly rapes and sexual offenses, SVU can get dark and emotional. In this particular case, we recommend you give binge-watching a break and take it one episode at a time.

Watch it on Hulu or YouTube TV.

Instead of serving one case per episode, The Wire takes one investigation and follows it through an entire season, allowing characters and viewers to get a better sense of what’s going on. Most crime series center on the detectives tasked with keeping the world safe. Not so much with Dexter, a show that follows a brilliant serial killer with a moral compass. While the titular character does have the urge to kill, he picks his victims from a pool of criminals, all in order to justify his grisly lifestyle choices. By day, he works as a blood splatter expert who helps detectives solve murders. Ironic.

A crime series with a twist, Dexter has a lot going for it, including a cheeky performance from Michael C. Hall and a fine balance between horror and character drama. It’s a dark and challenging series but offers enough twists and moments of light comedy to keep viewers coming back for more.

A refreshing take on the crime-solving genre, Psych can get too goofy for its own good, but it generally provides enough character development and heartwarming moments to balance things out. Moreover, the mysteries are inventive and Shawn is hilarious, so you’ll have a great time binge-watching this one.

The show is thrilling and thought-provoking, shocking and addictive. Like any good page turner it was adapted from the international bestselling novel of the same name The Sinner pulls viewers in from the very first scene and keeps them hooked until they finally get some answers.
