Expert review

If you’re looking for an interest-bearing checking account that has in-person and online banking capabilities, the BBVA Premium Checking account may be right for you.

It offers interesting perks like overdraft-fee forgiveness, ATM rebates and free wire transfers, which may outweigh the low 0.05% APY and monthly fee requirements depending on your needs.

What are the benefits of a BBVA Premium Checking account?

In addition to mobile and online banking, BBVA Premium Checking comes with these perks:

  • Interest-bearing account. Earn interest on all funds, but its 0.05% rate is lower than the national average for checking accounts.
  • Personalized debit card. Personalize your debit card for free.
  • ATM rebates. BBVA reimburses two out-of-network ATM fees a month.
  • Free wire transfer. Account holders receive one free domestic or international wire transfer monthly.
  • Overdraft-fee forgiveness. BBVA refunds one NSF charge for paid or returned items a year. After this you’ll pay $32 or $38 depending on your location.

BBVA’s ATM network and fees

BBVA has 1,000 full-service ATMs that let you deposit cash and checks, make withdrawals, transfer funds and more. It partners with the AllPoint and 7-Eleven ATM networks to bring customers an additional 63,000+ fee-free ATMs worldwide.

BBVA reimburses two non-network ATM transactions a month. After that, it charges a $3 fee for non-network transactions.

What should I look out for?

There are a few things to look out for with the BBVA Premium Checking account:

  • Monthly fees. Avoid the $19 monthly fee when you keep at least $4,000 in your account or make $4,000 per month in direct deposits.
  • High service fees. BBVA charges $12 for inter-account overdraft transfers, $30 for outgoing domestic wire transfers and $45 for outgoing international wire transfers.
  • Limited branches. BBVA doesn’t have branch locations outside of these areas:
    • Alabama
    • Arizona
    • California
    • Colorada
    • Florida
    • New Mexico
    • Texas

If you’re looking for an account with more branch locations and lower fees, shop around for other options.
