Expert review

The Banana Republic Visa® credit card could be an excellent choice if you often shop at Banana Republic, Gap, Old Navy and Athleta. It comes with a rewards rate of 5% on in-store or online purchases, cardmember benefits such as bonus points toward Luxe status and carries no annual fee.

The card also has a signup bonus: a 20% discount on your first online Banana Republic purchase within 90 days of account opening. This isn’t the most exciting welcome offer compared to competitors, especially since some cards allow you to use a similar discount any number of times within a 24 hours period.

Unfortunately, this card is somewhat punishing if you plan to carry a balance. It sports a 25.99% variable APR and offers no sort of intro period on purchases or balance transfers. This card is also a closed-loop card, meaning you can only redeem rewards on Banana Republic affiliated stores. Like with most store cards, your spending habits greatly affect how much value you’ll find in this card.

What to watch out for

  • High APR.
Pay a high APR of variable if you don’t pay your full balance on time. A low APR credit card could be a better choice if you often carry a balance.
  • No balance transfer option.
This is not the card for you if you want to make a balance transfer. If that’s what you’re looking for, consider a balance transfer credit card.
  • Limited redemption options.
Redeem your points only at Gap Inc. store locations.
  • Foreign transaction fees.
You will incur a 3% fee of the amount of each transaction you make abroad or online at a foreign merchant.
