- Reduced rates. Disability insurance rates are only based on the group claims experience. When claims are low and the group funding exceeds operating expenses, the excess money is returned to you via lower costs or improved coverage.
- Waiver of premium. AVMA will pay your premiums if you become disabled for at least six months and are under age 65.
- Rehabilitation services.Once you’re ready to start rehabilitation, you can work with New York Life — the underwriter of AVMA’s policies — to customize a rehabilitation program suitable to you and that the company will pay toward.
- Pregnancy is covered.Disabilities from pregnancy can be covered under a short-term disability policy, though there are restrictions and requirements.
- Multiple waiting periods.Choose between 30-, 60-, 90-, or 180-day waiting periods to balance your premiums with coverage needs.
- Up to $12,500 in coverage.Long-term disability pays 60% of your monthly earnings, up to $12,500.
- Student loan coverage. This supplemental disability option pays for your student loan debt while you’re disabled.
- Spouse disability. Your nonmember spouse can be covered for up to $500 a month if they are under the age of 65 and you carry at least $1,000 of long-term disability coverage.
- Cost-of-living adjustment. Allows for your monthly benefit amount to reflect inflation and increased cost of living in the future.
- Expanded own occupation. This lets you continue to receive partial disability payments even if you need to work in an alternative occupation.
- Future benefit increase. Available to members under age 50, this option increases your monthly benefit amount over time.

- Veterinary technicians need to look elsewhere. AVMA is specifically for veterinarians, which means veterinary technicians or other staff will have to look elsewhere for disability coverage.
