Baggage insurance

Who is eligibleThe main cardholder, their spouse or domestic partner and dependent children under 23 years old are eligible. You must use your card to pay for the common carrier fare to be covered.
What is includedYour bags are covered only if you are:
  • A passenger on a common carrier.
  • Boarding or exiting the common carrier.
  • On a common carrier’s terminal premises before boarding or after exiting the common carrier.

This means if you lose or damage your bags in your hotel, you won’t be compensated by the card’s insurance.

What isn’t includedAmerican Express baggage insurance doesn’t cover items, such as:
  • Cash, notes, accounts, bills, deeds, food stamps or evidence of debt or intangible property and securities.
  • Credit cards, passports, visas, tickets and documents.
  • Plants and animals.
  • Food, consumable and perishable items.
  • Eyeglasses, sunglasses and contact lenses, hearing aids, artificial teeth and limbs.
  • Prescription and nonprescription drugs.
When to fileYou have a 30-day window to provide a notice of claim. Contact Amex on toll-free number at 800-645-9700 or call collect at 303-273-6498 if you’re overseas.

Amex will send you a claim form that you have to sign. Send the form, a signed proof of loss and any other required documents within 60 days after receiving further instructions from Amex at AMEX Assurance Company, PO Box 981553, El Paso, TX 79998-9920.

Car rental loss and damage insurance

Who is eligibleYou must meet the following criteria to be eligible for car rental insurance:
  • You are the main cardholder or an authorized user.
  • You signed the car rental agreement.
  • You are a permanent resident to one of the 50 United States of America, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  • You activated your car rental coverage.
What is included
  • Once you activate your coverage, you have 30 consecutive days of car rental insurance against theft or damage.
What isn’t includedThe car rental insurance doesn’t cover all rental vehicles:
  • Cargo vans, custom vans, vans with a seating capacity over eight passengers, cube van or box truck and trucks with a weight rating of 10,000 lbs or more.
  • Customized vehicles, except for driver’s assistance equipment.
  • Vehicles used for commercial purposes.
  • Leased vehicles.
  • Cars older than 20 years and that aren’t manufactured for 10 or more years.
  • Limousines.
  • Off-road vehicles, motorcycles, mopeds, recreational vehicles, golf or motorized carts, campers, trailers and similar vehicles.

Note: Vehicles rented in Australia, Italy, New Zealand and countries on the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned list aren’t covered.

Also, you aren’t covered for losses or damage caused by:

  • Intentional damage that you caused.
  • Damage that occurred before you rented the card.
  • Manufacturing defects.
  • Confiscation by authority.
  • Wear and tear, including gradual deterioration.
  • Damage due to freezing, mechanical or electrical breakdown or failure unless this is a result of a theft.
  • Theft or damage to the rental vehicle that wasn’t locked or secured at the time the theft or damage happened.
  • Flats or blowout tires or stolen tires, unless they are damaged by fire, malicious mischief or vandalism.
  • Damage to another vehicle.
  • Damage to property or items not permanently attached to the rented vehicle.
When to fileReport any damage or theft to a law enforcement agency as soon as possible. If you don’t, you may not get any insurance benefits.

Provide notice of claim by contacting Amex at their toll-free number 800-338-1670 or, if you’re abroad, call collect at 216-617-2500. You must do this within 30 days.

If Amex needs proof of loss, they will send you a claim form that you must sign. Amex may also require additional documents that you must send within 60 days after Amex provides you with instructions. Send all these documents to:

How to activate car rental coverage
  1. Decline the full collision damage waiver (CDW) at the rental company or pay for a partial CDW.
  2. Your name is on the rental agreement as the person renting the vehicle.
  3. You must pay with your The Platinum Card® from American Express or using Amex membership reward points.

Trip cancellation

Who is eligibleThe main cardholder, their spouse or domestic partner and dependent children under 19 years old, and traveling companions who made advanced arrangements to travel with the cardholder or family members under a covered trip are eligible. You must use your card to pay for the common carrier fare to be covered.

A covered trip is a round-trip travel to one or more destinations where:

  • The eligible traveler departs by common carrier
  • The period of round-trip travel ends when traveler returns to the city of departure by common carrier
  • The trip does not exceed 365 days away from the city of residence
  • The eligible traveler charges the full amount of the cost of transportation by common carrier to the eligible card
What is included
  • Accidental body injury or loss of life or sickness
  • Inclement weather
  • Change in military orders
  • Terrorist action
  • Call to jury duty or subpoena by the courts
  • Eligible traveler or companion’s dwelling made uninhabitable
  • Quarantine imposed by a physician
What isn’t included
  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Suicide, attempted suicide or self-harm
  • Declared or undeclared war
  • Mental or emotional disorders
  • Injury from sporting activity
  • Intoxication by alcohol or controlled substance at time of eligible accident
  • Injuries related to attempted illegal or criminal act
  • Parachute injury
  • Injuries incurred during vehicular race
  • Dental treatments not required as a result of accidental bodily injury
  • Routine medical treatment or surgery
  • Hearing aids, glasses or contact lenses
  • One-way travel with no return destination
  • Travel performed with counterfeit tickets
  • Any occurrence while traveler is incarcerated
  • Intentional acts
  • Financial insolvency of travel supplier
  • Expenses not authorized and reimbursable by the traveler’s employer if made with a commercial card

A covered trip is a round-trip travel to one or more destinations where:

  • The trip does not exceed 365 days away from the city of residence
  • The eligible traveler charges the full amount of the cost of transportation by common carrier to the eligible card
What is included
  • Inclement weather
  • Terrorist action or hijacking
  • A common carrier’s equipment failure as documented by the common carrier
  • Lost or stolen passports or travel documents
What isn’t included
  • Covered losses that are made public or known to the eligible traveler prior to departure
  • Any expenses paid prior to the covered trip
  • Loss due to intention acts by the eligible traveler
  • Any expenses not authorized and reimbursable by the eligible traveler’s employer if the eligible traveler makes the purchases with a commercial card

How to file a travel insurance claim with The Platinum Card® from American Express.

  1. Call toll-free 800-437-9209 or call overseas collect 303-273-6498 to get more information or to file a claim.
  2. Provide notice of claim.
  3. Wait to receive a claim form from Amex.
  4. Provide proof of loss with the signed claim form and additional documents if required. Typically, you have 60 days after you receive further instructions from Amex to send the proof of loss and the documents at the specified address.

What to watch out for

Like many credit card policies, American Express’s travel insurance coverage is subject to change. The amount covered by each insurance policy ultimately depends on the card you’re using. Review your specific benefits guide for full details.

How to file an American Express travel insurance claim

You can file all of your insurance claims at the American Express claims center online. This portal allows you to review your benefits, file claims and check your claim status.

Most claims require a few steps:

  1. Provide notice of your claim to American Express at 800-645-9700. You can also use the claims portal, or write to American Express directly at AMEX Assurance Company, PO Box 981553, El Paso, TX 79998-9920. You’ll need to provide your notice within 30 days of the date of your loss.
  2. If required, American Express will send a claims form. Fill out this form and gather copies of any requested documents.
  3. Send your claim forms and documentation to American Express within 90 days of your loss date. You can review the status of your claim online through the claims portal.

Types of American Express travel insurance policies

  • Car rental loss and damage insurance.
    Receive loss and damage secondary coverage, not liability coverage, when renting a car using American Express.
  • Baggage insurance.
    If the airline carrier loses or damages your checked or carry-on luggage, be reimbursed up to $3,000.
  • Trip delay reimbursement.
    Receive reimbursement if your travel is delayed for a covered reason.
  • Trip cancellation reimbursement.
    Receive reimbursement if your travel is canceled for a covered reason.

Who is eligible for American Express travel insurance coverage?

Eligibility requirements differ slightly for each type of insurance coverage:

Baggage

Cardholders, their spouse or domestic partner and dependents younger than 23 are covered.

Car rental loss

Cardholders or additional members who signed the rental agreement and declined the full collision damage waiver offered by the rental agency are eligible. Cardholders must also pay for the rental entirely with their credit card. Coverage includes the cardholder, spouse or domestic partner and authorized drivers.
