Typical features of an Amazon credit card

All Amazon credit cards share the following features:

  • Two versions of one card.
Whichever card you go with, you can either get the standard version or the upgraded version with an Amazon Prime membership.
  • Cash back.
All Amazon credit cards let you earn accelerated cash back on Amazon-related purchases. The only exceptions are the non-Prime versions of the store card and the credit-builder card.
  • Gift card.
With all Amazon credit cards, you get an Amazon gift card as soon as your credit card application is approved.
  • No annual fee.
You won’t pay an annual fee for an Amazon credit card. However, you still need to pay for the Amazon Prime membership to get the Prime version of the card.

Amazon credit card points

Amazon markets its cards as cashback cards, but in reality, the Amazon cards earn points you can redeem for cash back. In reward terms, you earn between 1 and 5 points per $1 spent. And you need 100 points to redeem for $1 no matter which redemption option you choose.

Once you have earned enough points, redeem for:

  • Purchases at Amazon.com
  • Cash as a statement credit
  • Gift cards
  • Travel purchases

What is the best redemption option?

This largely depends on your needs. But as a general rule, avoid using your points on Amazon.com because that way you miss out on earning points on these purchases.

How to maximize your Amazon points

To get the most of your Amazon points, here’s what to do:

  • If possible, get the Amazon Prime membership to earn the highest rewards rate.
  • Use your Amazon card for Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market purchases.
  • Activate any additional cashback offer you may receive.
  • Buy gift cards on Amazon.com to earn the high rewards rate, for example, Uber gift cards.
  • Redeem points for statement credit or a deposit into an eligible checking or savings account.

An Amazon credit card alternative

The Blue Cash Everyday has no annual fee and offers an interesting welcome offer — earn 20% back on Amazon.com purchases on up to $200 back within the first 6 months of card membership, plus a $100 statement credit when you spend $1,000 during the same time frame.

This translates to $300 back in total. Considering the card has no annual fee, it can be an ideal option when you’re shopping for big items on Amazon like TVs, home appliances or computers.
