Amazon announces the 10 most entrepreneurial states – Utah lands on top
Small and medium-sized businesses contribute in a huge way to Amazon’s global marketplace.
Amazon recently announced its top picks for the most entrepreneurial states. The 10 states were chosen for having the most small and medium-sized businesses per capita that sell on Amazon. Utah topped the list, ahead of California and New York, two states that likely have more of a reputation for fueling the US economy.
Nicholas Denissen, vice president of Amazon, said many of those businesses run the gamut from handmade artisans and small businesses that have invented eco-friendly products geared towards sustainability. He points out that “… there are thousands of Utah-based businesses demonstrating a tremendous entrepreneurial spirit – more per capita than in any other state”.
Amazon dominates a corner of the US and global economy through small and mid-sized businesses.
Amazon is a global marketplace, but much of its business relies on smaller US businesses. Hundreds of thousands of those businesses are located in the 10 states that made the list, and more than 300,000 of those businesses jump-started their business as recently as last year.
It’s no secret that many brick-and-mortar stores in the US have closed their doors, and Amazon often gets the blame. In one survey, consumers responded that free shipping, the ability to compare prices and available product information all make it too easy to shop Amazon. In fact, 57% of those polled in the same survey said they do most of their shopping on Amazon.
Savvy entrepreneurs have made their way to the e-commerce site in a bid to have a piece of the pie. And many of them are successful.
Christine Krogue runs Mama Moon Boutique. The stay-at-home Salt Lake City mom says 99% of her home-based business comes from Amazon, where her business has become a multi-million-dollar enterprise.
Her sales have reached China, Germany, Australia and Argentina. The success of her Amazon business has afforded her the opportunity to hire other women in the neighborhood as well as help her partners in Nepal have richer lives.
In addition to Utah, California and New York, the other states recognized by Amazon for their entrepreneurial contributions were Colorado, New Jersey, Washington, Florida, Delaware, Massachusetts and Oregon.
Success for small business enterprises on the Amazon marketplace extend beyond the US borders. Small and medium-sized businesses are responsible for half of the items sold worldwide on Amazon.
